Creative Writing | It’s No Mystery
Posted by admin at November 9th, 2007
Let me make this as simple as possible for you. If you are looking for a way to branch out and get some real creative writing, your at the right blog. I used to be someone who hated to write. No matter what it was, I hated it. I preferred to visually portray my messages. In fact in all my advertising campaigns I would always put off the copywriting till the very end. After I pushed myself to learn real creative writing, I started to love it, and it now comes really easy to me. There are just a few basic steps to remember. If you remember these it will do wonders for you. Stop doing these and you will get stuck and become a creative hack.
First thing is first, stop thinking you suck at writing, because all you will think about is “how much you suck.” You know exactly what I am talking about. That one thought will be the most creative thought you will have while writing.
Once you stop thinking that you suck, forget all conventions of grammar. Grammar is all about rules and my friends RULES are meant to be broken. I know some people don’t agree with me about this one, but don’t worry; we worry about grammar LAST. Grammar many times tends to stop your creative thoughts because your to worried if it is written correctly, or if there is a better word for it.
Now speak your mind. Write out exactly how you would say it if you were talking to someone about this topic. This is what writers call voice, and what could be better than your own voice. You know your voice best, so why try to use someone else’s. Use words that you would use in conversation, and tone that you would use for the subject.
Example. So now lets say that I want to discuss politics with you. Well how does this sound to you.
“Politicians are stupid and are a bunch of asses that don’t know anything.”
Sounds corny but according to my two rules above, I wrote out exactly what I wanted to say, while I was not worrying about my grammar, and most of all I spoke my mind. That is how I might say it in a conversation, and it would sound fine. But when read off a paper it sounds horrible. So now lets improve what I said above. From now on it is just a play on words. How can I swap out words and change its form to say the same thing?
“Politicians don’t know from their left and right, they are like donkeys with no heads and two behinds.”
Great, that is clearly a greater improvement than before.
The biggest struggle individuals have when it comes to writing is the block of creativity because of the grammar issue, and not thinking simple. If you write out what you want to say, then try to improve it, it is much easier. I used to make the common mistake by gathering my thoughts, then try to write it out better. That would leave me stuck in a middle of sentence, and I would loose all my thoughts after that. Why do that to your brain, your only hurting your creativity.
So trust me on this one. Follow those really easy steps and watch how easy writing really can be, and how creative the results will end up.
Happy Writing
