Find the Perfect Inspiration
Ahhhhh yes, trying to find the perfect inspiration for your next creative struggle. Creativity requires an abnormal amount of inspiration. Inspiration comes from all sorts of places. Places we never thought of looking. But really, what is inspiration?
I define inspiration as “my imagination going WILD and CrAzY when I see, hear, touch, smell, or taste something.” That to me is inspiration. I use the five senses on all my projects. The five senses help me dig deep into questions that bring further understanding to the problem. I often have students who approach me with their creative struggle. “I have no idea what direction to take. I have tried everything, nothing works.” Ohhhh how many times I have heard that one from. There is nothing wrong with their creative struggles; everyone goes through it at some point. I often look at the ideas and concepts they have come up with. As I look, I keep a mental record of which senses they are touching base on. Usually I find that when people concept they only touch on two of the five senses, ignoring so many other possibilities. Even If you were coming up with an ad for say a computer, how can you explore the concept through taste? Well for starters, can you taste a computer? Can you imagine a person tasting a computer? What part of the computer would that person taste? The hard drive? For what reason would you taste the hard drive? Because it is like a dinner plate and holds everything…I myself am not sure where I am taking this scenario, but you can see my crazy directions. I am exploring deeper and deeper through all of my questions. One question after another will eventually get me to the perfect simplistic solution.
There are a lot of associations that can be made from the five senses. It is just a matter of understanding how to use them and what kind of questions to ask when using them. Sometimes it is a great way to write headline copy for an advertisement. Take a look at Taco Del Mar’s advertising campaign below. They touched on the senses for sure…With an extremely conceptual Tag Line if I might add.
