Group Brainstorming Techniques
First things first, leave the “I am the most creative out of everyone” or the opposite “I can’t possibly think of any good ideas” attitude at home. If you enter with that attitude, all you will be doing is repeating that sentence in your mind during the course of the session.
Construct your team around a table. Give everyone markers and pencils with paper to doodle with and jot down ideas. Have a moderator that keeps everyone on track when random conversation comes into play. It happens all the time. Every brainstorming session I have been in, it has happened. It is unavoidable in these sessions. The moderator should frequently repeat the question at hand to keep everyone’s mind on track.
How to formulate creative ideas
Begin by taking the problem at hand. In this example I will use ACME Donuts. “ACME Donuts is loosing business to other competitors. How do we increase awareness of ACME Donuts and switch consumers from competitor?”
This is a very common problem in majority organizations because of their failure to create a unique brand experience with its consumer. The moderator should be repeating that statement frequently to remind everyone.
As ideas begin to flow do not criticize someone for throwing out a bad idea. Bad ideas can turn into great ideas. Start to bounce ideas off of each other; even a simple thought is worth the pitch. You never know what your thought can spark in another person’s creative mind.
A creative meeting should have frequent breaks when conversation ends. Use the restroom, check your email, surf the web, take a walk, or read a magazine. Get your mind off of the problem. Then when the meeting restarts try to sit in a different chair for a different wall experience. A new perspective always brings better imagination.
